A Turning Point to a Musician's Fortune

Über die genaue Biographie und das Privatleben des Musikers und Künstlers Serj Tankian ist nicht viel bekannt, doch bei der Release-Party zu seinem neuen Album «Harakiri» [worauf ich mir noch einen congenialen Review-Abwichs erlauben werde!] hat er den Umkehrpunkt in seinem Leben nachgezeichnet, bei dem er sich entschied, der großartige Musiker zu werden, den wir heute ehren. Es enthält neue Informationen, die bisher nicht bekannt waren. 

Ich habe, in meinem fulminantesten Nerd-Akt der letzten Zeit, seine Story herausgeschrieben.

Here is a transcript of Serj Tankian's storytelling of how he got to a turning point in his life, that made him become one of the most interesting artists and musicians of our times. He answered to a question from a fan, participating the Release Party of his new album «Harakiri» in LA, taken place on the 9th July 2012.

 

»Questioner (Karin): So you've had so much success with System of a Down and just with your solo projects. And my question for you is: what was the turning point, if there was one at all, where you just kind of decided, 'hey this is what i love to do and I'm just gonna do it'?

Serj: Good question. I'll tell you this story. I'm in my 20's - wanna say about 23/24 -, out of college, working in the jewelry industry at my uncle's place and traveling a lot, you know, learning the trade, and doing well. I decided that's not for me, so I was looking for things that I wanted to do. Meanwhile I'm playing music of course, at nights and, and you know, all of that, and music's my passion. But at the time I didn't take myself too seriously in terms of my musical passion.

So I go: "What else can I do? - Hm, maybe I'll be a lawyer!"

So I decided I'll go to take the Kaplan classes and sign up for the LSAT and, you know, go that route. So I remember it was this really dark, rainy night and I was driving in my car after a full day of work and after those horrible Kaplan classes - sorry, whoever's taking them -, but you know, it was like I had to drift out to the edges of the things that I didn't wanna do to finaly grab myself and go: "You wanna fucking do music, man; this is what you wanna do!", you know, so I literally was driving home one day and I was so frustrated that I hit the brakes... I slammed on the brakes, I stopped, I'm like: "I don't wanna be a FUCKING lawyer! I wanna be a musician!"

Like, I said it loud to myself, and that was... [audience cheering] not that there is anything wrong with being a lawyer! [laughs] You know, but that was my vision and it needed kind of that, I don't know... I needed to kind of admit it to myself, and I was 23 and even though I was playing music. I started doing it more professionally, take it more seriously, and I designed my life so that I could be doing this, in every way.«

Im weiteren Verlauf der Q&As kommt es zu anderen kleinen Überraschungen. Erwähnenswert finde ich seine Antworten auf zwei bestimmte Fragen.

I. Ein Fan fragt ihn nach seiner Stimme. Da sie sich anscheinend zwischen Mezmerize/Hypnotize und Steal This Album! geändert hatte //Kritiker würden ihm den nasalen und extrem hochfrequenten Ton in die Fresse klatschen, aber dass er nicht mehr fähig ist, durchgehend zu brüllen, ist offensichtlich// fragte dieser Fan nach, ob dies eine bewusste Entscheidung war oder ob es sich natürlich ergeben hat [evolutionary].

Serj antwortet damit, dass sich die Stimme bei vieler Nutzung immer ändert, und sich auch weiter ändern wird. Er macht damit //zum ersten Mal, wie mir scheint// einen dezenten Hinweis auf die physische Grundlage seiner Stimme und seines Gesangs. 

Im Weiteren versucht er den Grund aus der Perspektive des Songwritings zu erklären: Zu Beginn seiner Karriere war er in seinen 20ern, und diese Zeit ist von großer existenzieller Angst [das phänomenologische Wort deutschen Ursprungs angst ist hier gemeint] bestimmt, wodurch er diese im Brüllen zum Ausdruck brachte und auch die Energie dazu aufbringen konnte. Mit den Jahren käme es ihm darauf an, diese Intensität in einem kleinen Wort schon auffangen zu können. Er beschreibt, dass die intention an die Stelle der projection getreten ist.

II. Auf die Frage hin, welches Album seiner gesamten Karriere Serj am meisten bedeutet hat, antwortet er überraschender Weise mit dem System Of A Down-Album Steal This Album! - das vielleicht am wenigsten konzeptuierte, aber dafür gerade mysteriöseste SOAD-Album. Er selbst könne nicht beschreiben, wieso es ausgerechnet Steal This Album! ist, aber der Vibe bei den Aufnahmen war ihm Grund dazu.
